Dr. Mark A. Bonn, President, received his
Doctorate in Recreational Resource Development with an emphasis on Tourism
Marketing and Research, from Texas A&M University in 1982. Dr. Bonn is the
Dedman Professor in Services Management, named after the late Robert Dedman,
founder of ClubCorp, in Dallas, Texas. He is President of The Bonn Marketing
Research Group, Inc., which specializes in marketing, research and educational
programs for the Hospitality, Travel, and Tourism industry. He is a tenured
Full Professor in the College of Business, Dedman School of Hospitality, at
Florida State University. He is a member of the Graduate Faculty, Department of
Marketing and created the MsM in Hospitality & Tourism. In addition, he
established the Resort & Condominium Management summer program at Florida
State University. He is in his third two-year term as an elected member of the
Florida State University Faculty Senate.
Dr. Bonn is Associate Editor for The Journal of Travel Research, which
is the top scholarly journal in the travel, tourism and hospitality field. He
also serves on three editorial review boards for other leading tourism journals
(Tourism Analysis; FIU Review), and has published over 40 articles in
the area of hospitality and tourism as they relate to marketing, service
quality, and sustainable tourism. They appear in such scholarly journals as The
International Journal of Hospitality Management, The Journal of Travel
Research, The Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing, and The Journal
of Hospitality & Tourism Research.
Dr. Bonn has provided marketing and economic research for over twenty-one
Florida counties representing Tourism Development Councils throughout the state.
Some of his recent clients include the Florida Department of Environmental
Protection, the Suwannee River Water Management District, the American Hotel
Foundation, Small Business Administration, Amelia Island Chamber of Commerce,
Abbott Resorts, Tampa Bay Convention and Visitors Association, the United
States Army, the United Nations, and the Governments of Argentina, Aruba,
Barbados, Bermuda, Costa Rica, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Martin, U.S. Virgin
Islands, and Venezuela.
Dr. Bonn's most recently completed projects entailed a four county study of the
economic costs and benefits associated with the State of Florida's Artificial
and Natural Reefs program in Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Monroe counties and
an eight county study examining the potential for eco-tourism along the 207
mile section of the Suwannee River. In May of 2003, Dr. Bonn became the first
researcher to document the economic benefits associated with natural springs
tourism to the Florida economy.
Dr. Bonn has worked in management positions with ski resorts in North Carolina
as well as with lodging properties in Florida . He was the past President of
the South Carolina Hotel Sales and Marketing Association. Currently, he is a
member of the American Marketing Association, the Travel Research Association,
and the Academy of Marketing Science . He is a past member of the Board of
Directors for the Society of Tourism and Travel Educators. He completed a book
entitled "Sustainable Tourism and the Florida Environment: Marketing,
Management and Operations”
